5 Documents to Have Ready Before Your Social Security Appointment

A Social Security appointment can take weeks to get. If you show up missing a document, you often have to start over. With these papers ready, things move faster, whether you're applying for retirement, spousal or survivor benefits.

5 documents

  1. Your Social Security number and, if you have it, your card.

  2. Original or certified copy of your birth certificate. Social Security usually doesn't accept photocopies.

  3. Proof of citizenship or lawful status, if you were born outside the U.S.

  4. Your W-2s, or last year's tax return if you're self-employed.

  5. Your bank account details (routing and account number) for direct deposit.

Depending on your case, they may also ask for your marriage or divorce certificate, or military discharge papers.

Two more tips

  • Check your earnings record in a "my Social Security" account at ssa.gov before your appointment. If a year of work is missing, it's easier to fix early.

  • Ask for an interpreter. Social Security provides interpreters for free. You just have to ask.
